Healing the brain. Restoring the body.

To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. ― Buddha

Healers have pondered the connection between physical and mental health for centuries. In recent years, science has identified the powerful relationships that exist between our mind and body; our physical health does affect our mental health – and vice versa. Concurrently, evidence-based medicine has proven that emotional, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect our health outcomes. These are incredible breakthroughs. 1 Method Center – with a specialized NeuroFitness protocol – is among the only programs in the nation integrating this knowledge into the treatment of addiction, dual diagnosis, and mental illness.

Offering a new approach to an old problem.

It’s not about running on a treadmill that leads you nowhere. It’s not about following a routine that doesn’t inspire you or yield results that you can see and feel. It’s about understanding how the body and the mind work together with science to make your life work better and more harmoniously with you. The physiological effects of addiction and mental illness are as damaging to the body as they are to the spirit. Creating the space inside your mind to address your physiological need to recover is as important a component to mental wellness as listening to and understanding your body correctly is to renewing physical strength. Giving yourself the tools and time to meet that objective is just the beginning. Our treatment protocol focuses on both.

Addiction and mental health issues take a toll on you physically, mentally, psychologically and emotionally. Finding courage to face your demons is a choice. Gaining strength as you do it is scientifically proven to repair your body on a cellular level, improve your mindset and increase your odds of success.

Exercise and application produce order in our affairs, health of body, cheerfulness of mind, and these make us precious to our friends. ― Thomas Jefferson

Whether you are a couch potato or someone who was once an enthusiastic, active athlete, your body takes cues from the mind. With the help of science, we have come to understand that it requires a concerted effort of both, working in synergy, to create change on even the tiniest of levels for life-changing results to occur. Our program helps take the guessing game out of how best to honor and worship this ever-changing work in progress by teaching you how to reconnect to your physical being through word, deed and action. By giving you this strong foundation, we help you build a stronger version of a better you. We work with you as you work with yourself to achieve realistic goals.

What’s the program?

At 1 Method, we design a customized health and fitness protocol – for you – that’s based on cutting-edge neuroscience, Applied Breathing Science, and empirical measures from the field of Integrative Biology and Physiology. The approach is as innovative as it is effective. You will feel better doing the program – in your mind, body, and soul.

We have certified, experienced personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, chiropractors, bodywork experts, meditation teachers, yoga instructors and nutritionists on staff to provide you with an elevated level of 1-on-1, holistic and fitness-based care. After your admission we begin your Health Evaluation. Based on the results, and your personal goals, our team customizes a fitness plan designed to assess where you are currently and to meet your needs. This directly correlates to your clinical treatment plan (i.e., anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, etc.).

A supportive, fully holistic approach.

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. ― Helen Keller

Our health and fitness program includes a myriad of holistic therapies. These work in synergy to support your individual fitness goals, recovery, healing, and the global treatment process:

Nutritional, chef prepared meals – Our in-house chef prepares healthy meals that include organic and locally grown fruits and vegetables (when possible) made with whole, nutrient rich foods. Throughout your stay we coordinate your nutrition plan with your clinical and Neuro-fitness treatment.

Bodywork – Massage, chiropractic, and acupuncture are important aspects of our NeuroFitness approach. The benefits of each are well known and can:

  • Relieve chronic pain
  • Reduce the effects of stress
  • Elongate (release) tight muscles
  • Loosen toxins from the tissues
  • Boost immunity
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Speed recovery from injuries
  • Calm the central nervous system
  • Increase and improve circulation

World-class gym – Train with our personal trainers 4x/week in a world-class facility that offers amenities including: state-of-the-art equipment, eucalyptus-infused steam, dry sauna, spa, Pilates reformers, and more.

Yoga classes – Weekly yoga classes (including 1-on-1 instruction if requested) provide a greater sense of awareness and reconnection to the body, resulting in grounding and self-realization. These are experiences that are elusive, forgotten or even lost when trapped in the cycle of addiction and mental illness.

Guided meditation – Meditation with a master teacher guides you to cultivate your own practice. Those that put mindfulness meditation to use – sometimes described as ‘non-judgmental attention to present moment experiences’ – will enjoy many healing benefits from the practice:

  • Relaxation
  • Clarity of thought
  • More focused attention
  • Positive shifts in mood
  • Enhanced self-awareness
  • Improved health and well-being

Wellness Groups – 1 Method wellness groups integrate our culture of wellness with the clinical routine. The supportive, nonjudgmental setting celebrates goals and provides education on topics related to our holistic approach that include health, fitness, nutrition, and spirituality. The process also incorporates hands-on activities, such as cooking classes, hiking and team sports.

Breathwork – is a technique that assists in refreshing your perspective, changing old thought patterns to create healthy behaviors, and processing trauma. The connection between brain and body is improved through the awareness that breathwork instills and the mindfulness that results from its practice. Breathwork takes you to the emotional core where unresolved issues or deep wounds are buried to help you identify what steps you can take to nurture and resolve or heal them without conscious thought.

Nutritional classes and 1-on-1 counseling – while eating healthy, nourishing and nutritional food is part and parcel of the 1 Method experience, learning how to create and prepare these foods helps you continue the practice of eating well when you leave. Maintaining a balanced, nutrient rich diet that keeps your body functioning at your optimum is as important as balancing your mind and spirit. We attend to all three.

Salt water therapy – During the spring and summer months, we offer surfing classes facilitated by certified surf therapy coaches. The salt water of the ocean has restorative properties that benefit mind, body and spirit. Connecting to this natural resource and source of vitality keeps you grounded and renews your energy and well-being.

Unrivaled care offering unrivaled results.

Going to treatment is hard. 1 Method understands that. Our program is designed to make your time with us count so you don’t have to go through this again (and again). We constantly encounter people who have been through multiple rehab programs. In each, many were placed on heavy medications, served unhealthy food, and in some cases – they expressed that they felt more depressed after treatment. Only after suffering a relapse did they find us and seek our help. If this has happened to you, we are truly sorry that was your experience. And if that isn’t your story – don’t let it be. The 1 Method program is different. We aren’t going to spend our time with you feeding you unhealthy foods while you talk (mostly in groups) about how you’re broken, different, and hopeless. Instead, 1 Method endeavors to reinvigorate your mind, body, and soul – while reminding you and reinforcing that you are capable, unique, and inherently good. Ours is a specialized approach to treating addiction, dual diagnosis, and mental health. 1 Method’s program is unparalleled and transformative. Get the results for yourself.

Other ways the health and fitness program helps.

Calm the body to calm the brain. ― Bessel van Der Kolk

Cravings

Our health and fitness protocols intervene with the brain mechanisms that trigger drug cravings. This reduces the intensity and duration of any withdrawal-related craving symptoms.

Anxiety

The protocol works to lower anxiety by stimulating the release of neurotransmitters, most notably, endorphins. It also works to engage dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin – all proven to decrease anxiety levels. The program can also eliminate day-to-day reliance on prescription strength anxiolytic medications.

Depression

By stimulating the production of neurotransmitters that regulate, stabilize, and elevate mood, our neurophysiological approach is proven to reduce symptoms of depression. These neurotransmitters include endorphins, dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. The fitness protocols also increase the absorption potential for endorphins, endocannabinoids, and other naturally occurring “feel good” chemicals within brain cells. Your mood naturally improves, and this brings about a more balanced outlook on life.

Sleep

Our protocol helps you sleep better and sleep well by improving function in the hypothalamus, a crucial part of the brain that regulates sleep depth and length. The process improves interactions within groups of hypothalamic neurons and adjacent groups of basal forebrain neurons. This assists in the natural production of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a crucial neurotransmitter in getting good sleep.

Outlook

Our NeuroFitness protocol establishes an individual health, fitness, and wellness regimen that you can follow during and after your time at 1 Method. We believe that recovery is much more than just the absence of disease. True recovery comes when we find harmony between each of the four bodies (i.e., Mental Body, Emotional Body, Spiritual Body, and Physical Body.). Our physical body is our foundation in this new life. Engaging the physical being improves our sense of wellbeing and fosters a more positive emotional experience and mental outlook. It also helps you to stay engaged in treatment and increases the likelihood you will recover for good.

Physical

The benefits of our treatment approach on your physical state are too numerous to count – and your customized health and fitness plan will be designed to help you achieve your personal goals. These may include:

  • Losing or gaining weight
  • Increased VO2 capacity
  • Boosting your immune system
  • Increased lean muscle mass
  • Improved flexibility
  • Better stamina and endurance
  • Strengthening of your core
  • Increased energy
  • Injury rehabilitation

Mood

Our protocol works to enhances mood for many reasons. Two of these are:

  1. it releases important chemicals in the brain like endorphins and serotonin.
  2. it gets you out into the world and puts you in touch with the culture of health and fitness. Staying connected with people whose goals are similar increases success rates.

It’s not rocket science that when you exercise regularly you gain an enormous sense of well-being. You feel more energetic throughout the day, sleep better at night, have a clearer focus and sharper memory, and generally feel more relaxed about your life. By immersing yourself in our culture, supported by our team, you’re on the fast track to making this your new reality.

Self-Esteem

According to stress management expert and radio personality, Debbie Mandel, author of Addicted to Stress, “Exercising creates empowerment both physical and mental, especially weight lifting where you can calibrate the accomplishments. Exercise organizes your day around self-care.” Ms. Mandel, (who is not affiliated with 1 Method), makes some excellent points. First, our health and fitness program brings goals out of the ether and into your day-to-day activity, which means action. That feels good and improves your sense of self-esteem. This is vital in the early healing and recovery process. Second, exercise begins to occupy an important place in your thought process – Obsession. By replacing unhealthy obsessions with healthier ones, your mind, body, and soul begin to reconnect. Every workout becomes a new experience and that improves your self-esteem – not to mention – just feels good.
